Amy Engel

Amy was born in Kansas and spent the first few years of her life living in a small commune among the wheat fields. When she was three, Amy and her parents moved to Iran. Although she was very young when she lived there, Amy has incredibly fond memories of Iran, both the people and the country. After Iran, her family settled in Kansas City, Missouri, where Amy attended the local elementary school and often gave the teacher hand-written notes correcting her spelling (this did not endear Amy to the teacher).

Samenvatting

What would you kill for?

After a brutal nuclear war, our country was decimated. A new nation of survivors lives within a fenced community. No one knows what lies beyond the fence; only that to be cast outside it is a fate worse than death.

Two families fought to govern our new society. Now, peace and control are maintained by marrying the daughters of the losing faction to the sons of the winning side in a yearly ceremony.

This year, it's my turn. My name is Ivy Westfall, and my mission is simple: to kill Bishop Lattimer, the president's son and my soon-to-be husband, and return the Westfall family to power.

I never expected that my new husband would be the one person in the world to truly understand me. But I can't falter now - I am the only one who can restore the Westfall legacy.

Bishop must die. And I must be the one to kill him...

The Book of Ivy is the first novel in a thrilling dystopian young adult duology from the author of The Roanoke Girls, perfect for fans of the Delirium series.

  • Pleasantly surprised!

I had heard a lot of good things about this book, but I was always a bit on the fence about it. I am a huge fan of the Hunger Games trilogy and the first Divergent book, but I know that some books tend to get overhyped. However, I was pleasantly suprised. Yes, it is another dystopian, post-apocalyptic world with issues that only this one very special character can solve, but I loved it nonetheless.

The story is quick, yet complex, and the characters are very interesting (especially Bishop!). I don't always agree with Ivy's reasoning, but that's not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion. If I had to compare this book to anything, I would say it's a bit like Matched by Ally Condie or The Selection by Kiera Cass. However, I consider these books to be quite light reads, a bit fluffy, if you will (I thoroughly enjoyed both books because of these aspects). The Book of Ivy has a great deal more action and political intrigue.

  • Loved it!

I read a lot of good things about this book, but I didn’t expect it to grab me like this. The Book of Ivy series consists of just two books. Most dystopian, post-apocalyptic novels I read are trilogies, which to mine opinion often results in a boring in-between book or a disappointing last one. So a two-book-series seamed perfect. Although I will never know if the series would be as good as a trilogy as it is now, this was the first time I was sad to see there is only one sequel.
