Samenvatting

The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe

As the narrator, Montresor explains to an unknown listener that because Fortunato despised him to death, he vowed revenge. However, he hid his hatred towards Fortunato because he wanted to carry out his vows without taking any risks, as revenge would not be complete if Fortunato was retaliated or if Fortunato died without knowing Montresor was his killer. He maintained the image of goodwill towards Fortunato and decided to take advantage of Fortunato's weaknesses for fine wines.

One evening during the festival, Montresor met Fortunato and invited him to try the cherry, which he had just acquired and wanted to confirm that it was Amontillado.Fortunato was surprised and excited, so when Montresor suggested that Fortunato might be too busy and Montresor might give Luchesi. Taste instead of Fortunato, insulting Luchesi's talent with wine and insists on joining Montresor to the cellar to taste Amontillado.Montresor offers a token protest, saying the cellar is full of color and will intensify Fortunato's cold. But the latter insisted Montresor wore a black silk mask and robe and took Fortunato to his home.

Montrezor had previously told his servants that he would be gone all night and forbid them to leave, knowing that they would all disappear to join the carnival as soon as he left. Nobody was home when they arrived. He took two torches and gave one to Fortunato, leading Fortunato to the Montrezor cemetery. The damp and chemical-filled corridors gave Fortunato a cough, but disagreed Montresor expressed false concern for Fortunato's health and offered him a sip of wine.Medoc Montresor offered to urge Luchesi to know that Fortunato would be looked down upon. And insisted on continuing, Fortunato drank to the dead and Montresor drank for Fortunato's longevity.

Fortunato recorded the size of the basement, and Montresor responded that Montresors were a large family. They open up the Montrezor arm, which is made up of golden feet that crush a snake that bites its feet against a blue field. Montresor's motto is "Nemo me impune lacessit", the Latin phrase for "" Nemo me impune lacessit ". "Nobody attacks me without penalty," as they walk deep into the cemetery, Fortunato, still drunk, and the bells on his costume ring the jingle.

Montresor noted that humidity and dirt levels increased because they were under the bed and offered to return to the surface, but Fortunato drank more wine and threw the bottle in a strange manner.Montresor did not understand the gesture, causing Fortunato to realize he was not a member. Masons Montresor insisted he was, although Fortunato is now unbelievable, and he showed the lute Fortunato in his coat.Fortunato exclaimed that Montresor was joking, but insisted they went to Amontillado anyway, Montresor led him. Into a deep vaults where at the end was a small crypt lined with human remains. In the fourth wall of the cellar was a small niche with a granite backing.

Fortunato tried to look into the recesses. But due to the stench, the lights from the flashlight were dim and invisible.Montresor claimed the channel was Amontillado, and once again mentioned Luchesi, which made Fortunato insult Luchesi and quickly wandered into the hollow.Montresor pinned him to the granite. As he was too amazed to resist, Montresor taunted Fortunato by asking him with a false plea about the niter. He reveals the stacks of stone and mortar hidden by the bones, then Montresor begins to build a wall with Fortunato inside.

Montresor laid down the first wall before Fortunato revived with a groan of intoxication. He then placed another three layers before he could hear another sound.Fortunato began shaking his chains, during which Montresor waited and listened with glee. When Fortunato stopped clinging, Montresor would place another three rocks and use his torch to light it in. Nook Fortunato screamed, causing Montresor to hesitate, but after a while he joined the scream until Fortunato stopped.By midnight, only one stone remained, and before Montresor finished the wall, Fortunato chuckled and asked. Let Montresor put an end to the joke and set him free with a shout. "For the love of God, Montresor!" But later taunted him and Fortunato stopped talking, despite Montresor's call. The only thing Montresor could hear as he laid the last brick was Fortunato's attire, Montresor's heart. Growing ill, which he blamed for a damp cemetery and he rebuilt a pile of bones that no one would disturb for the next fifty years, Montresor ended his story by blessing Fortunato in peace.
