"Fred Vargas (Parijs, 1957) is een Franse schrijfster, archeologe en historicus. Haar echte naam is Frédérique Audouin-Rouzeau. Fred is de afkorting van haar naam Frédérique en met Vargas koos ze voor hetzelfde pseudoniem als haar tweelingzus Joëlle, die als schilderes werkte onder de naam Jo Vargas.
Eind jaren tachtig begon ze met het schrijven van politieromans onder de naam Fred Vargas. Haar eerste roman verscheen in 1986, Les Jeux de l'amour et de la mort. Hiermee won ze datzelfde jaar al de Prix de roman policier du Festival de Cognac. In 2000 verscheen pas de eerste Nederlandse vertaling van Fred Vargas, Uit de dood herrezen (Debout les morts). In haar werken besteedt Vargas veel aandacht aan secundaire personages en plots en dialogen. Hiernaast worden haar boeken gekenmerkt door een sterke aanwezigheid van legendes en geschiedenis. Fred Vargas deed jarenlang bodem- en botonderzoek op verschillende plaatsen in Frankrijk. Afgaand op grootte, vindplaats en ontwikkeling trok Vargas conclusies ten aanzien van dorpen en hun sociale structuur door de eeuwen heen; hetzelfde deed ze voor Europa. Haar fascinatie voor en kennis van restjes, sporen en oude botjes komen goed van pas in haar romans.
Over de jaren heen ontving Fred Vargas meerdere prijzen voor haar werken, waaronder ook internationale prijzen als de Duncan Lawrie International Dagger en de Drapeau de Deutscher Krimipreis.

Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg is not like other policemen. His methods appear unorthodox in the extreme: he doesn't search for clues; he ignores obvious suspects and arrests people with cast-iron alibis; he appears permanently distracted. In spite of all this his colleagues are forced to admit that he is highly successful - a born cop.When strange blue chalk circles start appearing overnight on the pavements of Paris, the press take up the story with amusement and psychiatrists trot out their theories. Adamsberg is alone in thinking this is not a game and far from amusing. He insists on being kept informed of new circles and the increasingly bizarre objects which they contain: a pigeon's foot, four cigarette lighters, a badge proclaiming 'I Love Elvis', a hat, a doll's head. Adamsberg senses the cruelty that lies behind these seemingly random occurrences. Soon a circle with decidedly less banal contents is discovered: the body of a woman with her throat savagely cut. Adamsberg knows that other murders will follow. The Chalk Circle Man is the first book featuring Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg, one of the most engaging characters in contemporary detective fiction.

    Fred Vargas’s first novel (1996) about Commissaire Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg (J-BA), newly promoted to Paris , marks a break with how crime novels are written. He startles his staff with his personality and management style. Unlike his predecessor who barked out orders, J-BA is often detached, absent and hard to read or follow.
    In his Pyrenees homeland, he baffled colleagues with his case-solving abilities without induction or deduction, relying instead on instinct, intuition, feelings and emotions, based on and always confirmed by forensic evidence from colleagues. Ruefully, he confesses in this book that he has never misread another person.
    His first case in Paris involves someone who draws circles with blue chalk around small objects on the pavement. It attracts the attention of Paris newspapers. After dozens of reports about all sorts of innocent items inside them, J-BA feels that the circling in blue chalk exudes cruelty. When a dead mouse, then a dead cat are found in the middle of fresh blue circles, he knows this is not a prank. This will get bigger… And sure enough, soon after a 51-year old woman is found dead in new blue circle, her throat cut. Now J-BA has the case he felt was coming. Will it be just this one murder or are more to come? That is for readers to find out.
