Kyung-sook Shin groeide op in een afgelegen dorp in Zuid-Korea. Haar ouders waren boeren die het zich niet konden veroorloven haar naar de middelbare school te sturen, daarom vertrok ze op haar zestiende naar Seoul, waar haar oudste broer woonde. Ze werkte in een elektronicafabriek terwijl ze de avondschool bezocht, en publiceerde haar eerste verhalenbundel in 1988, toen ze vijfentwintig was.
