Thornton Wilder
Thornton Wilder (1897-1975) schreef romans 11 en toneelstukken. In de periode dat De brug van San Luis Rey verscheen, doceerde hij Frans aan een jongensschool in New Jersey. Hij bleef zijn leven lang lesgeven op scholen en universiteiten. Eind jaren dertig begon hij vooral naam te maken als toneelschrijver. Met zijn toneelstukken won hij nóg twee keer de Pulitzer Prize. Hij is de enige schrijver ooit die deze prestigieuze prijs zowel voor fictie als voor toneel gekregen heeft.
