Samenvatting

WINNER OF THE HUGO AWARD FOR BEST ALL-TIME SERIES

The Foundation series is Isaac Asimov’s iconic masterpiece. Unfolding against the backdrop of a crumbling Galactic Empire, the story of Hari Seldon’s two Foundations is a lasting testament to an extraordinary imagination, one that shaped science fiction as we know it today.

In a time before the Foundations, psychohistory’s creator Hari Seldon is made to stand before the Emperor of the crumbling Galactic Empire to present how his scientific theory of predicting the future might be applied to the real world.

However, Hari refuses to deploy his theory for political gain, setting off instead with reporter Chetter Hummin in quest of a place to safely apply his theory: Earth, the original home of humanity.

All records of Earth have been lost to time. Hari will therefore have to look back into the past, in order to seal the future of humanity for ever.

  • First prequel of the original Foundation trilogy

The last two Foundation novels written by Asimov are prequels to the original Foundation trilogy and ‘Prelude to Foundation’ is the first of these. Although they are prequels it is strongly advised to read them only after having read the Foundation trilogy and its sequels, the reason being that the prequels will probably greatly reduce the enjoyment of the other Foundation novels as they contain revelations that will remove most of the mysticism and surprise that would be experienced by someone reading the books in the order that they were imagined by Asimov.

‘Prelude to Foundation’ tells the story of how psychohistory came to Hari Seldon. When the 32 year old Seldon demonstrates the theoretical feasibility of the science of psychohistory the political leaders of Trantor immediately recognize the potential importance of this finding. All spring into action to obtain control of psychohistory and of Seldon, with or without his consent. What follows is a period in Seldon’s life referred to as The Flight. This is an adequate novel with decent characterization and writing. Nonetheless, to people that are familiar with Asimov’s other Foundation novels the mere decency may come as a slight disappointment. After the other Foundation and Robot novels, all detailing such epic and crucial episodes in the development of mankind’s role in the Galaxy, the story of ‘Prelude to Foundation’ will seem somewhat irrelevant and only of political importance. Moreover, it is a little predictable, since anyone that has read ‘Robots and Empire’ and ‘Foundation’ will be able to fill in most of the blanks. As a result the story remains a bit flat with the tension level never growing very high. The casual reader may safely skip these prequels without missing out on much crucial information. Despite it all ‘Prelude to Foundation’ is nonetheless a decent novel and for dedicated fans of the series it will provide nice background information as well as an enjoyable character sketch of Seldon.
