Asimov gebruikt heel mooie taal, dus voor English language lovers a perfect match. Een interessante visie van de mogelijke toekomst van onze beschaving. Ik ben onder indruk ervan hoe Asimov een hele complexe geschiedenis van Foundation in elkaar heeft gezet. Het boek beschrijft een heel lange periode dus de personages na enkele chapters komen niet meer terug....

The second installment of the Foundation trilogy, ‘Foundation and Empire’, consists of two parts describing the fourth and fifth Seldon crises. The two parts read as separate novellas with minimal overlap in plots. Indeed they were at first published independently in SF magazines in the mid-1940s. The first part describes the period two centuries after the time of Hari Seldon when the last and most devastating attack by the Empire threatens to destroy the burgeoning Foundation. The second part takes place one century later and starts the storyline that will dominate the rest of the trilogy: that of the Mule. With even the Empire’s attack deterred the Foundation’s trust in Seldon’s plan leads to a sense of invincibility and quiescence until an enigmatic general that calls himself the Mule makes ascendancy and sets his eyes on the Foundation. The Mule is a mutant, an individual evolutionary anomaly that could not possibly have been accounted for in Seldon’s psychohistorical calculations based only on the behavior of vast populations. It is the question whether or not Seldon’s plan has been voided by the Mule that establishes the main charm and impulse behind the rest of the trilogy. In addition, in this book the mystery of whom and what the Mule really is forms an alluring source of entertainment even if one will likely have guessed most of it soon enough on account of Asimov’s not always overly subtle hints. From this point on we will have longer periods with the same characters which aids in making the story all the more absorbing. The books in this trilogy become progressively more gripping and ‘Foundation and Empire’ is therefore a pretty safe bet for anyone that enjoyed ‘Foundation’.

Inhoudelijk is het boek erg goed, en het was goed al lang voordat de TV serie werd gemaakt…
helaas is de kwaliteit van dit druk erg teleurstellend ☹️
het papier is geel en van slechte kwaliteit, net geen wc papier. de kaft is ook nogal van midere kwaliteit.

Op dit moment worstelen de wetenschappers met het gegeven dat slechts 4% van het heelal zichtbaar en meetbaar is en min of meer wordt begrepen. De overige 96% bestaat, bij gebrek aan een betere uitdrukking, uit ‘dark matter’ en ‘dark energy’. Asimov gaat in deel twee van zijn Foundation serie nog een stapje verder: van de zichtbare 4% onderkent hij de helft niet. Vrouwen komen namelijk vrijwel niet voor in dit deel, hoewel het al een verbetering is ten opzichte van het eerste deel. Zo zie je hoe tijdsgebonden science fiction vaak is: vrouwen speelden in de jaren veertig en vijftig – het tijdssgewricht waarin de eerste drie delen van de Foundation boeken werden geschreven, klaarblijkelijk geen erkende rol van betekenis.

In dit tweede deel van de legendarische serie van Asimov staat een briljante generaal op die de ene veldslag na de andere wint. Hij wordt zelfs een geduchte tegenstander van de First Foundation, die op Terminus is gevestigd. Echter, conform Het Plan van Hari Seldon, de ongeevenaarde psychohistoricus, wordt hij door onontkoombare dynamische ontwikkelingen tijdig onschadelijk gemaakt. Dat geldt niet voor de volgende vijand: The Mule. De ‘Mule’ is een tegenstander die niet kon worden voorzien door Seldon. Het is een mutant die zijn aberratie inzet op het veroveren van de de Melkweg. En daarmee de First Foundation onderwerpt…

Ook dit boek leest weer smakelijk weg. Het heeft nauwelijks diepgang en de psychologie van de mutant is tenenkrommend. Maar wat maakt dat uit? Het verhaal heeft vaart en vele dubbele, driedubbele en vierdubbele bodems. Natuurlijk zie je al van verre aankomen wie de mutant is, maar de breuk met Het Plan heeft consequenties voor de toekomst. Op naar deel drie, dus!
