Na 'De onaanraakbare' wilde ik meer van Banville lezen. Een titel over Galileï heb ik niet uitgelezen. Omdat 'The Sea' de Bookerprijs heeft gewonnen leek me dat een goede keus. En het is een mooi boek, dat prachtig verhaalt over het leven van een schrijver over kunst (net zoiets als in De onaanraakbare). De verhaallijn is wat gekunsteld, maar goed. De 'onmogelijke wending / openbaring' - overigens is dat wat sterk uitgedrukt - aan het einde van het boek maakte bij mij een behoorlijke ergernis los. Ik zal het niet verklappen. Ik vind wel dat dit boek de Bookerprijs daarom niet had mogen krijgen!

People’s minds are said to be invaded by early memories from the age of 60. Elderly Max Morden (MM) writes this autobiography. It is hard to briefly describe Max’s character in a few words. The book is situated mainly on the Irish coast with a view of the sea. Readers might want to list all the negative things on MM and compare them in book readers’ meetings.

Max is an elderly writer on French painters (a dilettante, second-rater in his own understated judgment), still quite tall, but in some mental and physical decline. After the death of his wife Anna he has returned to where all his early life-stirring events and drama began, and lives in The Cedars, the mansion the far wealthier Clare family rented many decades ago. As a tall 11-year old he befriended the smaller twins Myles and Chloe, fell in love with their mother, but later became enchanted by Chloe. Today, The Cedars is a rundown boarding house with an eccentric landlady and only one other occupant of its 6 rooms for rent, a retired Colonel with set habits. The atmosphere!
From a young age Max has been an acute watcher and every page provides evidence. In this later life, he often links incoming thoughts to paintings he has studied and described, Bonnard most of all. Late in the book MM admits he has no personality, never had one. It may be the key admission in this brilliantly-paced, tragic and often hilariously-funny account of the life of a person unable to relate to anybody.
John Banville won the 2005 Man Booker Prize with this masterpiece, which is perfectly paced, with surprises hidden throughout the book, right until the final pages. On every page the reader is challenged to pick up a dictionary to acknowledge MM’s Irish superior way with words. An absolutely great, rich and annually re-readable novel.

Een boek voor mensen die goed zijn in Engels. Mijn Engels is redelijk, maar ik kwam er niet door heen. Na drie keer opnieuw te zijn begonnen ben ik uiteindelijk toch afgehaakt.

De mensen die wel goed zijn in Engels zijn erg positief over dit boek. Dus als je goed bent in Engels is dit wel een aanrader!
