Samenvatting

The Voyage Out is the first novel written by Virginia Woolf, first published in 1915. In reality, Virginia Woolf began working on the script in 1910, but was published only in 1915. The novel tells the story of Rachel Vinrace, who embarks on South America on his father's ship and begins a journey of self-discovery in a modern version of the mythic journey. The novel was written at a time when the Woolf was particularly vulnerable, a period in which he suffered from long periods of depression and in which he attempted suicide. But the resulting work contained the seeds of everything that would blossom in his later novels: the innovative narrative style, the focus placed on the analysis of female consciousness, sexuality and death. The novel is written in the traditional way, but basic themes and elements of Woolf's thought are already traceable, first of all its conception of love, defined as non-existent due to the too many differences between men and women.
