The Way Of Shadows Book 1 of the Night Angel

De boeken van Brent Weeks zijn echt toppertjes in het Fantasy genre. Dit eerste boek vertelt over het begin van de loopbaan van Azoth als wetboy. Dit zijn de betere versies van assasins, aangezien assasins doelwitten hebben en wetboys hebben deaders. De boeken zijn niet echt voor de weakhearted aangezien Weeks het er af en toe aardig bruut aan toe laat gaan.
Het verhaal is zeer goed. Alles is zeer duister, en je krijgt echt het gevoel dat je met Azoth opgroeit. Het plot is geweldig, zeer veel twists die je af en toe echt niet aan ziet komen.
Voor liefhebbers van het Fantasy genre die best eens een duik willen nemen in het leven van een assasin is deze trilogie echt eens must!

Azoth is a young boy and a member of a street gang where he is bullied by his elders. When he encounters Blint, known as the best assassin in the country, Azoth becomes his apprentice so that he will never have to be afraid of bullies ever again. However, what he cannot foresee is that the Godking of a neighboring country is making war plans to become the sovereign king of the world … and that in this war assassins will play a pivotal role.

In this first part of the ‘Night Angel’ trilogy we follow Azoth as an eleven year old boy who becomes an apprentice assassin, and the events nine years later that end his apprenticeship when he becomes Kylar the assassin. The intermittent period is quickly jumped through and his education by his master Blint is hardly described in this book, which is a missed opportunity. The only difference between Azoth the young slum ruffian and Kylar the assassin is seen through his increased skills. In fact, he hardly shows evidence of growth of character and emotional insight. This is a defect that more characters suffer from, while others come across as caricatures or stereotypes.

By the story and the prose this book is not a literary masterpiece, but that doesn’t matter so much as it doesn’t pretend to be. It is written in an unpretentious, straightforward style. The story is fast-paced and action packed and almost feels like watching a movie. Even though this novel lacks the depth and wit of Joe Abercrombie’s First Law trilogy (another fantasy with anti-hero main characters) it does make for an entertaining read which gets better in the two sequels.

Dit is een aanrader voor alle liefhebbers van fantasy of gewoon spannende actievolle boeken. Het is een goed begin van de trilogie. Zeer spannend, interessante personages en een uitgebreide wereld.
Komen wel veel namen en begrippen in voor, waar de betekenis niet direct van wordt uitgelegd. Dus af en toe is er wel eens een 'huh-momentje'.

Een prachtig boek dat je meteen meesleurt in zijn wereld. Ook wanneer je het - met tegenzin - weglegt, trekt het je meteen weer in zijn wereld alsof je nooit bent weggeweest. Samen met het hoofdpersonage leer je de wereld kennen, een wereld die even duister als mooi en hoopvol is.
