Dit is een geweldig boek. De auteurs zijn in staat gebleken hun enorme belezenheid op het gebied van wetenschapsfilosofie, filosofische aspecten van de psychologie, geschiedenis van de psychologie, cognitieve psychologie, neuropychologie en evolutie-gebaseerde psychologie te verwerken in een samenhangend, goed opgebouwd betoog, dat naar duidelijke eindconclusies toewerkt. Daarbij komen ook onderwerpen aan de orde als geest-lichaam dualisme, bewustzijn, vrije wil, waarbij voor kopstukken als Dennett, Frankfurt, Clark e.a ruimschoots in de bespreking worden betrokken. De diepgang, grondigheid en genuanceerdheid is een herademing na boeken zoals die van Victor Lamme en Dick Swaab (die eigenlijk eerst verplicht tentamen hadden moeten doen over dit boek, alvorens er zelf een vol te schrijven).
Het knappe is dat de auteurs deze diepgang en grondigheid met een heldere didactische opzet weten te combineren. De schrijfwijze is helder en zeer leesbaar, alles is verdeeld in korte subparagrafen, er zijn verwijzingen naar de verklarende woordenlijst achterin, verspreid staan er kaders waarin de essentie uit het voorgaande wordt samengevat, en de 10 hoofdstukken eindigen met een duidelijke conclusie en aanbevelingen voor verdere studie. Dat maakt het boek geschikt voor psychologiestudenten, terwijl het tegelijk niet te versmaden postacademische kost is voor wie - zoals ik - al vele jaren werkzaam is in het vak.
