Kinky Friedman

Richard 'Kinky' Friedman, uit Texas, is een joodse
countryzanger die met name bekendheid krijgt door zijn eerste album Sold American, waarop
nogal opmerkelijke nummers als 'High On Jesus' en 'Ride'em Jewboy' te vinden zijn. Wanneer
Friedman's carrière exact een aanvang neemt, is niet duidelijk. Wel is bekend dat hij zich
aanvankelijk in pacifistische kringen bevindt, en naar Nashville verhuist, waar Tompall Glaser hem
onder zijn hoede neemt. Chuck Glaser produceert zijn eerste album, waarop Friedman zich laat
begeleiden door o.m. John Hartford, Billy Swan en The Glaser Brothers (Jim, Tompall en Chuck).
Friedman treedt dan ('74) regelmatig op met The Texas Jewboys. Friedman's teksten slaan in als
een bom, doch veroorzaken ook veel ergernis ('Lord, They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus
Anymore'). Het in '75 verschenen Kinky Friedman wordt gedeeltelijk opgenomen in Nashville en
Los Angeles. De plaat stelt echter teleur. Te goedkope commerciële grappen zijn vervat op Lasso
From El Paso. De plaat zou aanvankelijk 'Asshole From El Paso' heten.
